Character History: When Starlight was a filly, she had one friend: Sunburst. They did everything together, especially practicing magic. Then, Sunburst got his cutie mark, one that showed his special talent was magic-related, and she remained blank flanked. As soon as Sunburst's mother saw this, she shipped him off to Celestia's Magic School. This is the point where a sane pony would keep in touch with Sunburst through letter writing and make new friends. Not Starlight. Starlight, who is incapable of reacting to things in a normal, measured way, decided that cutie marks were terrible and meant the end of all potential friendships and thus ponies were better off without them.

She went through a teenage goth phase, eventually got her own magic cutie mark, then studied and improved her magic until she was strong enough to tear the cutie mark off another pony and replace it with an equal sign. Of course, she wouldn't be able to do this without her own extremely powerful magic, represented by her cutie mark, so rather than get rid of it, she just hid it under makeup. She slowly gathered a crowd of brainwashed friends, all of them with only an equal sign on their ass. It was a utopia of sameness, no pony special, no pony better than anypony else, no pony unique. Sure, the food was awful, since anypony who had a special talent for cooking was no longer any better than anypony else, and the only fashion accessories they had were basically rucksacks, but at least there was no fighting.

Up until Princess Twilight Sparkle and her friends showed up. Initially, Starlight saw this as a great opportunity. Turn the Princess of Friendship into part of their cause and how could anyone deny that she was right? She welcomed Twilight and her friends with a song about how great being equal and the same is, then ambushed them in her Cutie Mark Vault and stripped them of their cutie marks. She locked them in a room with a recording playing to brainwash them into accepting her philosophy. The next morning, most of the ponies were still unmoved, but Fluttershy, who had seemed more accepting of the idea to begin with since everyone seemed so nice and happy, said she was willing to join up. Unbeknownst to Starlight, this was all an act. She was trying to retrieve their cutie marks for the others. That being said, Starlight was paranoid enough that she did bring their cutie marks to her house rather than keeping them in the vault with the others. Fluttershy wasn't sure how she'd be able to retrieve them, but she did witness something else: Starlight's own cutie mark, still very much there, even if she was covering it up.

The next morning, after consulting briefly with Fluttershy, Twilight herself said she was thinking about joining, but asked if not having the cutie mark was absolutely necessary. Starlight insisted that yes, it is, and that a pony living among them would completely invalidate the whole process. Fluttershy took that opportunity to dump a bucket of water on Starlight, revealing the cutie mark she was hiding. The other villagers felt betrayed and went to get their own cutie marks back, but Starlight ran away with Twilight and her friends' cutie marks in jars. Though the crew could not follow her very effectively themselves without their cutie marks and special talents, the other ponies banded together and used the talents they'd gone so long without to chase after Starlight and take the cutie marks back. Starlight teleports away, feeling dejected and betrayed, and plots her revenge.

She figures out how to use Twilight's friendship map and an ancient spell to travel through time, pulling Twilight and Spike the dragon after her. She then stops Rainbow Dash from completing her sonic rainboom, thus breaking the cutie mark connection that the six friends had formed by all getting their cutie marks at the same time. Twilight is dragged back to the present, only without her friendship with the other ponies, it's a very changed present, filled with war and heartache. Twilight goes back, determined to fix things, but she can't stop Starlight from stopping the rainboom. She goes back time and time again, each time returning to a worse future, until finally, she brings Starlight to the present with her.

Twilight explains that without her and her friends, Equestria is doomed. Starlight doesn't want to believe that any friendship could be so powerful, but any change to the past creates ripples, and she can't argue with what she's seen. Twilight asks why she's so opposed to cutie marks anyway and Starlight shows her what happened with her and Sunburst. Then she takes them back to the rainboom moment, and starts to tear the scroll so that whatever happens now will stick. Twilight begs her to reconsider, telling her it isn't too late to start again and make new friends, and Starlight finally agrees, letting the rainboom happening and whisking them (and Spike) into the original timeline. Twilight explains what happened to her friends, then invites Starlight to stay in the castle as her first pupil in the magic of friendship.

For her first lesson, Twilight decides Starlight should reconnect with her old friend Sunburst. It's convenient, since he lives in the Crystal Empire, the same place where Twilight's brother, Shining Armor, lives, and he and his wife, Princess Cadance, have just had a baby. Twilight and her friends are headed there anyway for the Crystalling Ceremony. Twilight is thrilled that she can combine this trip with Starlight's first friendship lesson, but Starlight is apprehensive. Sunburst was so knowledgeable about magic that he has to be an extremely powerful and important wizard now, and Starlight enslaved a town and stole their cutie marks. She's afraid he'll hate her for that, and can't see why anyone, let alone Sunburst, would want to be friends with her after what she did. And indeed, their reunion is extremely awkward. It's been so long and they have nothing in common and don't know how to start reuniting.

Finally, Starlight leaves, but something's wrong: it's snowing. The Crystal Empire might be in the Frozen North, but the magic of the crystal heart protects it from blizzards. She rushes back to the castle where she learns that the baby is an alicorn, with wings and magical powers even stronger than baby unicorns, and the baby's cry had shattered the crystal heart. She had also destroyed the first and only spell that seemed likely to work. Twilight tries to recreate the spell while Starlight rushes back to find Sunburst.

But it turns out Sunburst isn't the big important wizard she thought, but since Starlight is Twilight's pupil, he assumed she was. She admits her past, then tells Sunburst they have to get out of there. But Sunburst, who might not be very powerful, is still extremely knowledgeable about magic. He comes up with a combination of spells that together, combined with the magic of the Crystalling Ceremony itself, might work to fix the heart. He and Starlight rush to the castle and together, with the help of Twilight, Princess Cadance, Shining Armor, and Princess Celestia and Princess Luna, they perform the ceremony. The love of the entire Crystal Empire for this baby fills the newest crystal shard, and Sunburst puts the shard into the heart. The crystal repairs itself, and the storm ends. Starlight leaves, determined to keep in touch this time.

Starlight and Twilight continue to work on friendship, and Princess Celestia decides to visit and see how Starlight is doing. Twilight tells Starlight that for the dinner, she has to make a new friend and bring them with her, but that's easier said than done. Starlight, always one to spell first, ask questions later, magics up a fancy cake to impress Mrs Cake, the baker, and ends up just offending her. Then she tries to befriend Applejack's brother, Big Mac, but when he proves too reticent for her tastes, she uses a spell to make him talk more. Applejack is not impressed..

Finally, after stressing herself into a frenzy, she heads for the Ponyville spa. Being pampered and massaged is just what she needed, and she vents about her issues to the other pony there with her. The other pony, surprisingly, can relate to Starlight's problems. She too feels judged based on her past actions. Starlight is thrilled. Finally, a pony who understands her! She brings Trixie back to the castle, but Twilight is less than pleased. While Trixie may have reformed, and Twilight may have theoretically forgiven her, Twilight still doesn't trust her, especially around her pupil, and even more especially around her own teacher. She suggests that maybe Starlight should make a different friend, but only annoys Starlight by making it clear Twilight doesn't trust her to choose her own friends. Starlight rushes off to hang out with Trixie more and vents about Twilight. Trixie feeds her insecurities and says that she can't go to Twilight's dinner anyway, she has a magic show that night. Starlight had volunteered to be Trixie's assistant, but she can't do both. Starlight is annoyed enough that she agrees.

Twilight shows up right when they're preparing for the show, angry with Starlight for standing her up without a word. Trixie takes the opportunity to gloat about how Starlight chose her over Twilight, talking about how she won, and making it sound like she'd only befriended Starlight to one-up Twilight. Starlight is hurt, and runs off. Trixie is heartbroken because, while she may have gotten caught up in the moment, she really did like Starlight, her first and only friend. Twilight goes to talk to Starlight, and Starlight decides to try again, showing up just in time to help Trixie with her show and keep her from being eaten by a pony-eating manticore. Twilight apologizes, and Starlight officially has a new friend.

Abilities/Special Powers: Starlight, like most unicorns, has magic. Hers is especially strong, and her creativity with it is frightening. Using magic for telekinesis is not unusual, but she can use it to lift her own body and fly, which usually is just a trick ponies with wings (Pegasuses, Alicorns) can do. She also has used her powers to remove a pony's cutie mark and with it, everything that makes them unique, travel back in time (with the help of a scroll), teleport, literally bottle up her emotions, and mind control other ponies. She can also combine spells or adjust spells and even create new ones.

She is currently working on mastering the most powerful magic of all: friendship. She's not as good at that one.

Also she's good at flying kites.

Third-Person Sample: It's not a spellbook from her world, that's for sure.

In Starlight's exploration, she'd come across the library and she couldn't help but find herself drawn to the section on magic. Well, she thinks it's a section, at least. It's a hard library to navigate. Twilight would have fainted by now at how disorganized it is. Or started organizing. But Starlight just started paging through an interesting looking spellbook.

She doesn't recognize any of the spells, which is unusual enough to get her heart thrumming with anticipation. New spells! Ones she's sure she can learn, and maybe even use to adapt other spells! Sure, some might say she overuses magic a little, and probably has more than enough spells already in her arsenals, but how can she resist a little experimentation?

She comes across one that seems harmless enough. The book is for human magic users with wands, but she's fairly certain all she has to do is use her horn to make the motions and speak the incantations and it should work just as well for her. At least, she hopes that's the case.

She sets the book down, frowning, and sets a rock in front of her. A perfect thing to practice on. Even if she messes up, it's just a rock! Who cares what happens to one of those? She aims her horn at it carefully and says the incantation. "Lapifors!"

A jet of light bursts from her horn and hits the rock. It… remains a rock. Starlight sighs, disappointed, but then she blinks. On top of the rock, right where her magic struck, is a small rabbit.

She gives a delighted laugh. "Yes! I knew it would work!" Maybe not exactly how she anticipated, but she made a rabbit! It's a success! She almost doesn't notice the small pop behind her. But she can't help but notice the five following it.

She turns around to see six more rabbits. As she watches, another three appear. "Uh oh."

She uses her magic to grab the book and bursts out of the room, more rabbits appearing every moment. She can fix this! At least, she hopes so.

First-Person Sample:

[Starlight's not used to these devices or much about this place, but it's just like learning new magic. She's sure she can do it. After a few minutes of fiddling with a hoof, she turns it on, using her magic to hold it out in front of her.

Slightly upside-down, but she hasn't noticed.]

Greetings. My name is Starlight Glimmer. I am a newcomer here. I have read all your pamphlets and other resources, it's all very informative, but none of it answers my real question.

[She hesitates. If she's wrong, this is going to be very awkward. But she's pretty sure she's not wrong.]

...is this a friendship test? Not that I'm complaining! I'm happy to keep making new friends! It's just… a little bit of warning would have been nice, you know?

[It would be just like Twilight to spring a pop quiz on her by spiriting her away to a magical otherealm. She forces a smile. If it is a test, she's determined to do well.]
